The feature magazine articles are to be written as a really captivating bedtime story. We prefer Creative non-fiction with the historical facts woven around the story of the people involved. The characters used should have substance, appeal, and cause an emotional reaction from the reader.
We want to put the people back into the history, so character development is equally as important as the facts of the history behind the story. Accuracy is of the upmost importance. When writing answer all the questions the readers may have (who, what, when, where and how.) The feature articles we will publish will be real-life stories depicting a historical event. We are ideally seeking history that has been untold to this point, or told from a point of view that has not been attempted before.
We want the stories to read like fiction, but a true and factual account. Yes, we are repeating ourselves for a reason. We want our readers to think about our stories after the reading is done, and look forward to the next issue. Wet their appetite and show them a side of historical Manitoba they never knew existed.
Then and now photos would be included in the articles. Subjects of interest could include the history of dog sledding, early settlements, the legend of the black puma, the ghost of Charron lake, the first Manitoba murder, etc. Length 850 to 1100 words, double spaced, single space after a period, Canadian spelling and metric measures.

The How to Articles: will be enlightening and practical seasonal instruction. For example gardening for the spring issue, food preserving for fall, winter safety for road or home, and for summer sunblock information, historical vacation spots etc. The list is actually endless.
Humour spots: Light hearted and poking fun at ourselves. For example a short list of things that make Manitobans different: Socials, gitches, the habit of always using the back door and not having steps to the front door, no fences, a dug out being a spring fed hole in the ground and nothing to do with baseball etc. Perhaps something along the lines of "you know you're a Manitoban when..."
Food: Manitoban recipes highlighting home-grown food. What's edible if lost in the woods. Where's the best places for picking wild berries, fruit, etc. Cooking on the wood stove. Recipes for wild game.
